Obituary – William Douglas Goodfellow, OBE

Realcold Limited would like to acknowledge the passing of businessman and philanthropist Dr William Douglas Goodfellow, OBE on 10 July 2014 at the grand age of 97.

Douglas, as he was known, took over the family his father, Sir William Goodfellow started in the dairy industry in 1909 and remained at the helm until he died.

The Goodfellow family effectively kick-started the NZ Dairy Industry and launched its co-operative model (that is the basis of Fonterra today).

Amalgamated Dairies thrived under Douglas' leadership and he diversified the family business in fishing, food, finance, property, clothing and engineering; including Realcold, Realcold Argus and Milmeq.

Douglas and his family are generous donors to the St Kentigern Trust.  He also established and funded a post graduate chair in general practice at the Auckland Medical School.  The Goodfellow unit offers continuing education to doctors and nurses in primary health care.  The Goodfellow family also have the Goodfellow Scholarship in Engineering available through Auckland University School of Engineering, which is strongly competed for each year.

Today Douglas' son Peter Goodfellow is the president of the National Party, and his other son, Dr Bruce Goodfellow has taken over his father's role as the Chairman of the St Kentigern Trust Board and Chairman of Refrigeration Engineering Co Ltd group.
